SAMR Model

The SAMR Model is a framework for educators to consider how and when to incorporate technology into the classroom and lessons. Introduced in 2010 by Ruben Puentedura, the model considers how technology can be incorporated in addition to or modification of lessons.

The model considers technology integration into education in four ways, divided into either enhancing education or transforming education.

Substitution: using technology to directly replace an aspect of a lesson or assignment without it adding or detracting from the education.

Augmentation: the use of technology as a replacement that also adds to the lesson in ways that the aspects it replaces could not.

Modification: technology being used to change lessons and assignments altogether.

Redefinition: entirely new tasks, lessons, and assignments that are created due to the use of technology in education.
